Interesting article, but for new blogs/bloggers, Adsense or something similar is probably the best way to go in the beginning.

I personally have several different “niche” sites – and have some private advertising on a couple of them – but some highly trafficked sites even do very very well with Adsense as well!

But yes, for some blogs, private ads might be more profitable – and site owners should review their options and test different methods from time to time.
